Description

A superb 1995 UK Trojan Records reissue of The Upsetters – Double Seven, originally released in 1973 and produced by the legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry. This particular edition features the distinctive Porky Prime Cut and Primed inscriptions associated with renowned mastering engineer George Peckham. An essential recording from Perry's remarkable pre-Black Ark period, Double Seven captures the producer developing his unmistakable approach to reggae, dub and studio experimentation. Combining inventive instrumental arrangements with infectious rhythms, unconventional production techniques and soulful influences, the album remains a fascinating document of early 1970s Jamaican music. The album brings together performances from The Upsetters, U-Roy, I-Roy and David Isaacs, with outstanding tracks including Kentucky Skank, Double Six, Jungle Lion, High Fashion and Waap You Waa. Perry's inventive reworking of American soul music is particularly evident throughout, with interpretations of material associated with Sam & Dave, Al Green and The Chi-Lites. A highly desirable addition to any serious reggae collection, particularly for enthusiasts of Lee Perry, early Trojan releases and vintage Jamaican dub. The George Peckham mastering inscriptions provide an additional point of interest for collectors.
