How to Buy Used Vinyl Records

Buying a used record means choosing a particular copy, with its own pressing details, sleeve condition and playback history. This guide explains what to check before ordering from Impala Records. If you are ready to browse, explore our used vinyl records or find records by artist.

Read both condition grades

Our listings show the sleeve grade first and the vinyl grade second. EX/VG+ therefore describes an Excellent sleeve and Very Good Plus vinyl. A record with an attractive cover can still have worn vinyl, and a clean-playing disc can come in a sleeve with visible wear. Consider both grades alongside the written condition notes and photographs.

VG+ is a used copy that has been played and enjoyed; light marks and occasional background noise may be present. EX indicates less wear. A VG copy has more obvious evidence of use, and surface noise or ticks may be audible. Read our full vinyl grading guide for the distinctions and any bracketed playback notes.

Check the pressing, not just the album name

The same album can have many releases. A catalogue number, label design, country of manufacture and matrix or runout information can help distinguish a particular edition. Check the details given for the copy you are buying. An album's original release year is not necessarily the year that a later reissue was pressed.

If you collect early issues, browse our first pressing records. Check the evidence in each listing rather than treating an old-looking sleeve or familiar label as proof of a first pressing.

Look for the inserts that matter to you

Original inner sleeves, lyric sheets, posters, booklets and obi strips can matter to collectors. Do not assume that every component originally supplied with an album is still present. Read the listing for what is included, and use the photographs to assess the actual copy.

Understand cleaning and playback notes

At Impala Records, every non-sealed record is cleaned in our Degritter and individually assessed. Cleaning can remove contamination; it cannot repair scratches, groove wear or other physical damage. Where appropriate, we play-test records and include relevant playback observations in the listing. This does not mean every record is fully play-tested.

A visually clean record can reveal an issue during playback, while a marked record may play better than its appearance suggests. Written playback observations help explain those differences. Read how we clean and assess vinyl for more about our approach.

Used vinyl and sealed editions

Our dedicated used-vinyl collection contains opened copies. Sealed editions are listed separately elsewhere in the catalogue. A sealed record cannot be inspected beneath its seal, and an unopened copy is not a guarantee against manufacturing or storage defects.

Choosing a copy for your collection

Decide whether your priority is playback condition, a specific pressing, complete packaging or the price. A scarce pressing with wear may suit one collector, while another prefers a cleaner later issue. Check the condition notes before making that choice.

Use the artist, genre, price and availability filters to narrow your search. Browse rock, punk and alternative, jazz or folk records, and contact us if a pressing detail or condition note needs clarification.
