Description
The inscriptions on Sides A, C and D include crossed-out characters, as reflected in the matrix transcription. A superb 1989 UK double-LP edition of The Great Society – Live At The Matrix, released by Edsel Records under catalogue number DED 280. Recorded live at San Francisco's legendary Matrix nightclub in 1966, this collection documents one of the most important groups in the development of the city's psychedelic rock scene. The Great Society featured Grace Slick before she joined Jefferson Airplane, alongside guitarist Darby Slick, David Miner, Jerry Slick and Peter van Gelder. The recordings offer a fascinating opportunity to hear the original arrangements of Somebody To Love and White Rabbit, both of which would subsequently become defining recordings for Jefferson Airplane. Particularly notable is the extended six-minute performance of White Rabbit, which differs considerably from the more familiar studio version. This 17-track double album brings together the material originally released on the Columbia albums Conspicuous Only In Its Absence and How It Was. The music ranges from blues-influenced garage rock to exploratory San Francisco psychedelia, with extended arrangements, improvisation and Grace Slick's unmistakable vocals. The original glossy gatefold sleeve features period photography and extensive liner notes by Andy Childs, making this an attractive historical document of the West Coast psychedelic movement. A particularly nice example, with a VG++ sleeve and both records grading EX.
Condition
Sleeve: VG++
The original glossy gatefold sleeve presents extremely well, displaying only light signs of previous storage and handling. The front artwork remains clean and attractive, with the distinctive band photograph strongly presented. There is minor age-related edge, corner and surface wear consistent with the VG++ grade. The gatefold remains structurally sound, with the original artwork, photographs and liner notes intact. Graded VG++.
Vinyl: EX
Both original vinyl records retain an excellent deep gloss with only minimal evidence of previous handling or play. Any visible surface marks are light and superficial, consistent with the EX grade. The labels remain well presented, and the distinctive DED 280 matrix inscriptions are present in the runouts. Both records grade EX.
Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the description and condition assessment.
