Low marked the beginning of what became known as Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy, produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti with major creative contributions from Brian Eno. The album radically divides its two sides between concise, experimental rock songs and the atmospheric instrumental pieces that became hugely influential on electronic, ambient and post-punk music. Side One contains Sound And Vision, Breaking Glass, Be My Wife and Always Crashing In The Same Car, while Side Two moves into the extraordinary instrumental sequence of Warszawa, Art Decade, Weeping Wall and Subterraneans. This remarkable album reimagines the music of German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk through Latin American musical styles, transforming their precise electronic compositions into arrangements incorporating cha-cha-cha, cumbia, merengue and mambo influences. Behind Señor Coconut is German electronic musician and producer Uwe Schmidt, also known as Atom Heart, whose extensive catalogue spans experimental electronics, ambient music and Latin-inspired electronic production. Rather than simply remixing the original Kraftwerk recordings, El Baile Alemán reconstructs their melodies and rhythms in an entirely different musical language, combining programmed elements with lively Latin arrangements and vocals. The result is a fascinating meeting of two seemingly opposite musical worlds: the disciplined electronic minimalism of Kraftwerk and the warmth and rhythmic complexity of Latin dance music. The album includes wonderfully inventive interpretations of Showroom Dummies, Trans Europe Express, The Robots, Neon Lights, Autobahn and Tour De France. Particularly enjoyable is the transformation of Trans Europe Express into a cumbia arrangement, while The Robots becomes an infectious cha-cha-cha.
